A Dream in Chinsali — The Beginning of WilCyberTek

The story of Mwenya Bupempushi does not start in a big city. It does not start in Lusaka, London, or Silicon Valley. It starts in Chinsali — a town in Muchinga Province, deep in the heart of Zambia, where internet connections are sometimes slow and opportunities for a young engineer are not always easy to find. But in that town, one young man sat down in front of a computer screen and made a decision that would change his life — and the lives of thousands of people who would one day use the systems he built.

When Mwenya first started learning how to write code, there was no teacher standing over his shoulder. There was no expensive university course. There was no mentor calling him on the phone to explain what to do next. There was only him, a screen, and a burning desire to understand how things work — and to build things that actually matter. He taught himself everything. He read technical documentation that other people call "too difficult." He watched tutorials at odd hours of the night because the internet connection was sometimes better after midnight. He tried things that failed completely. He tried again. He failed again. He tried again — until it worked.

What he saw around him pushed him forward every single day. He saw businesses in Zambia struggling every day to manage money. He watched people queue at banks and government offices for hours just to pay a simple fee that should take thirty seconds. He watched business owners write numbers in paper ledgers and then lose those books. He saw schools sending students home because the manual payment records were such a mess that no one could tell who had paid and who had not. He saw organisations using a WhatsApp group as their entire accounting system — members would send screenshots of mobile money notifications to the group, and the treasurer would sit and count them by hand at the end of the month, praying the numbers would match.

Mwenya looked at all of this and he did not feel hopeless. He did not feel like these were problems that belonged to someone else in a faraway country. He felt determined. He said to himself: "These problems have solutions. The solutions are called software. I am going to learn how to build software. And then I am going to build the solutions." That simple decision, made quietly in Chinsali, is where everything begins.

That is how WilCyberTek was born. Not from a business plan written in a boardroom. Not from a government grant or a bank loan. It was born from one man's absolute refusal to accept that Zambia should settle for less than the best technology available anywhere in the world.

The Silent Years — Coding in the Dark

Before anyone knew Mwenya's name, before ZedSunga existed, before any client had ever seen his work — there were thousands of hours of silence. This is the part of the story that people never talk about. They see the finished product — the clean interface, the instant payment, the beautiful dashboard — and they think it was easy. It was not easy. Nothing about it was easy.

There were evenings where the code would not compile. There were nights where a single small mistake — one missing bracket, one wrong data type, one variable name spelled with the wrong capital letter — would break the entire system and take hours to find. There were mornings where Mwenya would sit down, open his terminal, and discover that the work he had done the night before had to be completely thrown away because he had taken the wrong approach. Most people in that situation would get frustrated and walk away. Mwenya would stay. He would fix it. Then he would sit with it a little longer and understand exactly why it broke — so that it could never break that same way again.

He made a decision that most people are not brave enough to make. Instead of learning the easy tools that everyone else uses — the drag-and-drop website builders, the ready-made templates, the "no-code" platforms that produce websites that look the same as everyone else's — he chose to go the hard way. He chose to learn from the bottom. He chose Go (Golang).

What is Go and Why Does It Matter?
Go is a programming language created by Google and used by some of the most powerful technology companies on earth. It is not easy to learn — it is strict and it forces the programmer to think clearly about every single part of what they are building. But when it is done right, it runs like a machine that will never stop. Most Zambian websites crash when too many people use them at once. Mwenya's systems do not crash because Go handles thousands of users at the exact same second using something called "goroutines" — a technology that allows the server to do thousands of things at the same time without slowing down. This is the difference between a bicycle and a jet engine.

He also chose PostgreSQL as his database. This is not the simple database that beginners use. This is the same database that powers Instagram, Reddit, and major financial institutions around the world. It is completely honest. It never loses data. When you tell it to save something, it saves it — and it keeps a record that proves it saved it. If the power goes out in the middle of a transaction, PostgreSQL rolls back to the safe state and nothing is lost. For a financial platform where real money is moving between accounts, this matters more than almost anything else.

During those silent years, Mwenya also taught himself how to manage a Linux server from the command line. This means he does not just write the software that runs on a server — he builds and manages the entire machine itself. He knows how to configure Nginx, the web server that sits in front of his applications like a professional security guard, deciding which requests are allowed through and which ones are blocked. He manages SSL certificates so that every single piece of data travelling between a user's phone and his server is protected by 256-bit encryption — the same standard that banks and governments use.

He learned cloud infrastructure on Oracle Cloud. He learned how to configure virtual machines, how to set up automated database backups that run every night without anyone pressing a button, how to read server access logs line by line to spot unusual behaviour before it becomes a security problem, and how to patch a live system without taking it offline and interrupting users who are currently using it.

He also went deep into professional email infrastructure — not just how to send emails, but how to prove to every email system in the world that those emails are genuine and trustworthy. He learned SPF records, DKIM signing, and DMARC policies. These are the technical signatures that tell Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, and every other email provider on earth: "This message genuinely came from this company. Do not put it in the spam folder." This matters enormously for every organisation in Zambia that wants their communications to be received and taken seriously.

He learned mobile money integration in depth — how to connect a website or application directly to MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and Zamtel Kwacha through their official APIs. An API is like a direct, private telephone line between two computer systems. When a user presses "Pay" on a ZedSunga page, Mwenya's code picks up that telephone line, calls the mobile money network's computer, and says: "Send a payment prompt to this phone number right now." The entire conversation between the two systems happens in under two seconds, and the user on their phone sees a PIN prompt appear as if by magic.

He studied cybersecurity — not as a casual interest but as a professional discipline. He learned the most common ways that attackers try to break into financial systems. He learned about SQL injection attacks, where an attacker tries to send harmful commands hidden inside what looks like a normal login form. He learned about XSS attacks, where an attacker tries to inject harmful scripts into a web page. He learned about brute-force attacks, where a computer tries thousands of passwords every minute until it finds the right one. And then he built specific defences against every single one of these attacks into every system he creates.

After years of building systems for other people, after hundreds upon hundreds of hours of studying in the dark, after countless errors and fixes and complete restarts — Mwenya decided it was time to build something that the whole world could see. Something that would serve as his proof. Not a certificate. Not a portfolio of screenshots. A living, breathing, real platform that any person in Zambia could sign up for, deposit money into, and withdraw from — right now, today.

He called it ZedSunga.

ZedSunga is not a simple website. It is a complete financial technology platform built entirely from zero. No template was used. No shortcut was taken. No plugin was downloaded and dropped in. Every single line of code was written by Mwenya's own hands — from the database schema that defines how data is organised, to the server configuration that decides how requests are handled, to the mobile payment integrations that connect directly to Zambia's mobile money networks, to the user interface that you see on your phone.

When a user wants to withdraw their money, they request a payout and confirm their identity with a one-time PIN sent directly to their phone by SMS. Within sixty seconds, the money is sitting in their MTN wallet, or their Airtel wallet, or their Zamtel wallet. Not tomorrow. Not "within three to five business days." Now. In sixty seconds. This is possible only because Mwenya did not use someone else's payment plugin. He wrote the integration code himself, talking directly to the mobile money provider APIs, handling every response, every failure, every edge case.

How ZedSunga Security Works — In Plain Language
Passwords are protected using bcrypt at cost factor 14 — meaning even if someone stole the entire database, they would need over one full second just to test a single password guess. At that speed, cracking a strong password would take longer than the age of the universe. All database queries use parameterised placeholders — making SQL injection attacks architecturally impossible. Session tokens are stored in HttpOnly cookies that JavaScript on the page cannot read — preventing XSS session theft entirely. All money movements use row-level database locks to make sure no one can withdraw the same money twice in the same instant.
